About this studio
Studio Hop is the home of swing dance in Toulouse. The school operates from two dance floors across two levels: a large 260m² ground-floor space with 130m² of sprung parquet, a stage for live orchestras, a bar and lounge area, changing rooms, showers and toilets; and an 80m² dance floor on the first floor. The venue sits at 4 avenue de Rangueil, near metro station Saint-Agne (line B, five minutes' walk) with Vélib bike stations 500m away and bus routes 34 and 44 stopping nearby.
Classes cover the full range of swing styles. Beginners can start with Soft Shoe, Meet the Music, and Boogie Session. Intermediate students progress to Swing Cocktail, Temps Fort Balboa, Rhythm in Motion, and Boosters. Advanced classes include Balboa with Sue & Louis, Percussions Corporelles (body percussion) and Bal Connexion. The school also teaches Jazz Roots and blues. Registrations for the 2026–2027 schedule opened in summer, with open-door events held 5–6 September 2026 and introductory courses 7–11 September 2026.
Studio Hop is known for its festivals and competitive events. The school organises the European Balboa Festival, The Battle, and Dipping Blues, each with presentations, competitions, and accommodation information. Summer camps run dedicated Balboa Week, Lindy Week, and Blues Week modules. The Bridge – City Exchange (9–11 October 2026) connects dancers internationally. The studio also hosted the first Balboa festival in Europe in March 2002.
Social dancing is central to the programme. Regular Swing & Blues parties include DJ nights (€6 entry), live orchestra nights with variable pricing depending on band size, Swing Party, Apéro Blues, Balboa Brunch events. DJs include Jean-Philippe Delort, Sandrine Gressier, Susana Bernal Sanchez, Maka, Luc Prunet, Jonatan Hedberg, Mago (Gontran Galinier), and Ailsa Croy. A dedicated app lets you track upcoming events and avoid missing anything.
The school publishes detailed historical notes on swing, Balboa, Lindy Hop, Charleston, Jazz Roots, Blues and Collegiate Shag, tracing their origins and cultural significance. It curates music playlists by speed (slow, medium, fast swing) for home practice and social dancing.
