About this studio
Urban Movement Dance Academy was founded in 2021 by Michelle and Sergio Urban, a husband-and-wife team with backgrounds in fine arts and engineering. Michelle is a Fine Art Educator with the Socorro Independent School District; Sergio works in engineering at HP Enterprises. As dance parents, they created UMDA during the COVID-19 pandemic to meet a need they saw in their community—a space where dancers could rebuild confidence, reconnect with the art they loved, and grow with purpose.
The studio's philosophy centres on three core pillars: growth without gaps (consistent, high-quality training with no shortcuts), progress over perfection (a culture where mistakes are part of the process), and creative impact (choreography rooted in storytelling that uplifts the community). You'll train in ballet, jazz, contemporary, hip hop, acro, improvisation, release technique, and conditioning. Classes are structured by level and age, from French Fry Crew Groove Lab for ages 5–7 up to adult hip hop and the 18+ heels team, Amour.
The academy runs several competitive and performance groups: French Dip (Advanced Hip Hop Team), Dip Crew (Intermediate/Advanced Hip Hop), Gloss (Intermediate/Advanced Hip Hop), Urban Movement Dance Company (Contemporary Performance Group), Allure (Teen Competitive Team), Encore (Junior Competitive Team), Illuminato (Senior Ballroom Team), and Junior and Mini Ballroom teams. Beyond weekly classes, the studio offers drop-in choreography sessions led by both faculty and guest instructors from out of town, private lessons by request, and a monthly Health & Injury Prevention Series (held the first Friday of each month) exploring topics like injury prevention, strength building, recovery, and dancer wellness.
Located at 10964 Montwood Dr. Suites A, B, and D in El Paso, TX, the studio serves recreational dancers, pre-professional dancers, students interested in choreography or teaching, and competitive teams across preschool to adult ages. Instructors include Michelle Urban, Sarah Licon, Mia Denee Urban, and Sam Fajardo. The studio's approach emphasises mentorship in choreography, teaching, leadership, and creativity—shaping well-rounded artists and future leaders, not just performers.

Studio history
Founded in 2021 by Michelle and Sergio Urban during the COVID-19 pandemic, the studio was created as a response to how the disruption deeply impacted dancers' confidence and connection to dance. The founders envisioned a space where dancers could build technical foundation while being challenged creatively, access performance opportunities and mentorship often unavailable locally, and develop into well-rounded artists and future leaders.
