Kyle Abraham

Kyle Abraham is a major contemporary choreographer whose work connects Black cultural experience, personal history, musical structure, and a deliberately hybrid movement vocabulary drawn from ballet, hip-hop, West African movement, and vernacular forms. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Abraham studied at the Civic Light Opera Academy and the Creative and Performing Arts High School, where his early artistic education included classical cello, piano, and visual art alongside dance—a breadth that later became central to how he organizes choreography through musical texture, imagery, and cultural memory. He earned a BFA from SUNY Purchase in 2000 and an MFA from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 2006, the year he founded the ensemble now known as A.I.M by Kyle Abraham. The company's mission centers dance made through Black culture and history while bringing together artists with varied disciplinary backgrounds.

Abraham's early repertory established his ability to move between intimate autobiography and wider social history. *The Radio Show* connected the loss of a Pittsburgh radio station with his father's decline from Alzheimer's and aphasia, earning Abraham a New York Dance and Performance "Bessie" Award in 2010. That same year he received a Princess Grace choreography fellowship. His 2012 season included the Jacob's Pillow Dance Award and *Another Night*, his first commission for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

The MacArthur Foundation named Abraham a fellow in 2013, recognizing a choreographic practice that joins traditional and vernacular dance forms to examine identity and personal history. As his profile expanded, he continued making repertory for A.I.M while accepting commissions from institutions with distinct performance traditions. *Untitled America*, completed for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 2016, addressed incarceration and its effects on families. In 2018 Abraham created *The Runaway* for New York City Ballet and received the Princess Grace Statue Award, marking a period of increasing engagement with ballet companies.

Subsequent commissions placed his language in works for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Paul Taylor American Modern Dance, American Ballet Theatre artists, the National Ballet of Cuba, and The Royal Ballet. These projects show a choreographer adapting to highly trained institutional ensembles while retaining an interest in individual presence, rhythmic disruption, and the cultural meanings carried by music. Abraham was named the Claude and Alfred Mann Endowed Professor in Dance at USC's Glorya Kaufman School of Dance in 2021. That phase of his career included *Optional Family* and *The Weathering* for The Royal Ballet, as well as A.I.M works such as *An Untitled Love* and *Requiem: Fire in the Air of the Earth*. In April 2026, SUNY Purchase announced his selection as a Guggenheim Fellow in choreography as A.I.M marked its twentieth anniversary.
