Chiampa Dance Center

Chiampa Dance Center has been operating continuously for over 75 years, making it one of the only dance schools on the North Shore with that longevity. Founded in 1937 by Lillian Arden Chiampa in East Boston, the school taught ballet and pointe, tap, jazz and acrobatics. As the business grew, her daughters became instructors and eventually directors. Daughter Jeannine "Mrs. T." Trigilio expanded the school to Lynnfield, MA in the 1970s, running the studio for over 30 years while simultaneously working as a teacher and vice principal in the Peabody School System. In 2004, Mrs. T. began mentoring her longtime student Terrie Bater, who officially took over as Director in 2012.

The studio teaches ballet and pointe, tap, jazz, acrobatics, contemporary, and jazz funk. Classes are structured by age and level, from Baby & Me (18 months and up, where parent and child participate together) through high school company and team classes. Combo classes blend multiple styles for younger students. The studio also offers adult ballroom dance. Classes typically run 45–75 minutes depending on level; classes with six or fewer students are 30 minutes long. During recital rehearsal weeks (mid-April until recital week), class times are altered for students in grades 1–12.

The school is located in the Post Office Building on Salem Street in Lynnfield, in the lower level of Post Office Square. The studio has a closed-circuit TV system in the lobby so parents can observe classes without entering the dance floors. Outside shoes are not permitted on the dance studio floors.

All students perform in an annual recital, typically held the week before Memorial Day. The recital is split into two shows: one featuring all groups, and a separate show for solos, duets, company and team dancers. The studio also offers open solo rehearsal time and team choreography classes. Classes are offered Monday through Thursday, with Saturday sessions for younger students. The school follows the Lynnfield Public Schools calendar and closes for Thanksgiving, Christmas and school vacation weeks.

The studio emphasises a safe, structured, nurturing environment where students learn proper technique, terminology and dance history. The teaching approach acknowledges physical and emotional development in children and adolescents, with lessons designed to build positive self-awareness, poise and self-confidence. Class size is limited and the studio maintains strict dress codes tailored to each style, ensuring students receive accurate instruction in body alignment and posture.

Classes are held in a dedicated dance studio in the lower level of Post Office Square on Salem Street. Parents remain in the lobby during lessons and can observe via closed-circuit TV. Students must arrive on time in proper dance attire and footwear specific to their class style, and are expected to participate actively and respectfully.

Terrie Bater is the current Director, having trained extensively under Mrs. T. (Jeannine Trigilio), who ran the studio for over 30 years before retiring in 2012.

Classes are structured by age and level, with beginner-focused classes including Baby & Me, Babydance, Kindercombo and K1 Combo for young learners, and adult ballroom for adults new to dance.
