About this studio

Honolulu Dance Studio was established in 1986, growing from an eight-member dance troop called the Honolulu Gurlz Dance Company based out of Danceworks in the Kaimuki neighbourhood. Founded by Director Cathy Watson-Izumi, the group was dedicated to training in excellence and performing throughout the Hawaiian Islands. In 1991, the dancers were invited to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Disney World in Orlando, Florida—a moment that marked the beginning of the group's national and international exposure. The dance team developed into a multi-genre instructional school, and today the studio strives to continue developing a culture of excellence through dance.

The studio offers classes in contemporary, jazz, ballet theory, hip hop, lyrical, and modern styles. You can enrol in kids' classes (age three and up), pre-ballet/jazz, hip hop kidz, intro to hip hop, and adult classes. Private lessons are available by appointment. The studio also offers online classes and has expanded into musical theater with acting and singing lessons (currently private classes only). New students should arrive 15 minutes early to register and complete a liability waiver form; paper forms are available on-site if needed.

The studio partners with Jared Ake of Boogie Down Productions and Ballet Mistress Elizabeth Miller to provide expert instruction across all styles. The team has decades of experience in the industry, including musical theater and television acting. Classes welcome beginner, intermediate, and advanced dancers. The studio maintains a modified schedule during competition week (typically late May), and runs a Summer Intensive programme. Special events include a company performance on the second Sunday in October at Children & Youth Day Fair on Punchbowl Street, and an all-studio Christmas performance in December at Ala Moana Center Stage.

Office hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. Friday and Sunday are closed; texting is preferred on those days. The studio is located at 1030 Queen Street, #2A in Honolulu. You can call to register or ask questions, or text for new students.
