About this studio

JNP Dance Academy serves school-aged students and adults with structured dance education in a positive atmosphere. The studio is run by owner and instructor Joelle P Swanson, who graduated from Dean College in 2010 with a BA in Pedagogy of Dance. At Dean, Joelle studied ballet, modern, tap, jazz and hip hop, and trained under a Balanchine protege (Jill Silverman) as well as participating in programs with the Alvin Alley school in NYC and Broadway Dance Center. She has 30 years in the dance world, performing in productions including the Nutcracker and at the Patriots Place opening day performance, and has taught for 16 years with award-winning choreography at local and national competitions.

The studio's teaching philosophy emphasizes creating a stimulating class environment that is inclusive, accessible and reflects the intellectual, cultural and social diversity of learners. Staff hold the right to place students in classes based on technique and experience, not age alone. Joelle daily reflects on lessons to note what worked well for each student and what modifications or accommodations are needed so dance is worthwhile for all.

JNP's class levels range from Preschool Foundations (ages 3.5–5.5) through Level 5 (14+). Core styles taught are ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop and acro. Acro is offered as an add-on class and must be paired with another dance style. Hip Hop includes a Boys Only option at Levels 2 and up. The studio also runs a competitive company (invite/approval only), pre-pointe and pointe classes (invite/approval only), and private lessons booked weekly.

Instructors include Kyla Campbell, who has a double major in Early Childhood Education and Dance with a specialisation in hip hop from Salem State University and a master's degree in Education specialising in working with students with moderate disabilities. She is in her 6th year at JNP. Jordan Roberts graduated from Roger Williams University in 2022 with a BA in Dance & Performance Studies, focusing on modern/contemporary and choreography. She has trained at Bates Dance Festival and the Joffrey Ballet School, and under professionals including Sean Curran of Sean Curran Dance Company and Christina Robson of the Bill T. Jones Company. Jessica Wright-Ciulla has danced since age nine and was a co-captain of the Danvers High School Dance Team in 2007. She graduated from Salem State University in 2011 with a major in English and a minor in Dance, and taught dance classes of all styles for 9 years before returning to teaching at JNP. Arianna Cavallaro graduated from Salem State University in 2024 with degrees in both Geological Science and Dance. She teaches preschool ballet and tap as well as middle school jazz and contemporary, and received the Presidential Arts Scholarship and was named to the National Honor Society for Dance Arts. Kloe Barry is also on staff.

Summer programs include 6-week sessions and themed camps (Glow In The Dark Camp: July 13–16, and Lego Dance Camp: August 10–13) for kindergarten through 6th grade. Older students can attend 6-week summer sessions in classes including Teen Ballet with pointe, Teen Jazz/Tap/Contemporary, Teen Acro and Teen Hip Hop. The studio also offers Strength Training for ages 9+.
