About this studio

Midwest Movement Collective is an all-in-one dance and movement studio for adults, located on North Monroe in Grand Rapids. The studio opened in June 2022, founded by Hannah Mico and Paige Gabert, who met in 2018 while taking pole dancing classes and wanted to create a safe, inclusive alternative to the restrictive culture they experienced elsewhere. In October 2023, Nick Rutowski joined as owner and investor, helping expand the studio into a neighbouring suite that added 1200 square feet of additional space.

The studio teaches pole dancing, aerial silks, aerial pole, contemporary, ballet, tap, yoga, sensual flow, heels, and other grounded movement. A Dance Styles Taster class runs on Mondays at 7pm for people unsure what to try. Classes are structured for all experience levels—beginners are genuinely welcomed and supported, not pressured to "get better" or change their body. The studio's design explicitly rejects the weight-loss messaging and shame that plagues much of the movement industry.

MMC operates three named studios: Baker (pole), Ledford (small studio), and Lane (large studio). The Baker and Lane studios feature a professional-grade, partially sprung Harlequin dance floor with optional roll-out carpet bonded foam. The expanded space includes 10 additional aerial points, an extra bathroom and shower. You'll find a free parking lot, water fountain, yoga mats, blocks, a tea station, and 2 single-user restrooms. Lobby hours are Monday–Thursday, 5:30–9pm.

Membership options include unlimited recurring monthly memberships, credit packs, and single drop-in classes. The studio also runs private lessons, studio rentals, and parties. Community Access is central to their model: a portion of monthly revenue funds The Community Access Fund, offering discounted memberships (15–30% off), a shared pool of donated class credits, and The Way We Move—sliding-scale workshops facilitators can propose. Sex workers and people of colour receive particular welcome and support. A Collective Care Membership exists for anyone facing financial barriers, with no income documentation required.

The studio emphasizes intentional inclusivity through regular staff training, including LGBTQ+ bias training with Grand Rapids Pride Center and disability advocacy primers. The team actively shapes the space with feedback from clients, instructors, and community experts. The studio was built partly through local crowdfunding and pop-up fundraisers in 2020–2021, raising $20,000 in community capital.
