About this studio
Rock That Swing is an international swing dance festival held annually in Munich, celebrating the dances and music of the swing and rock'n'roll era from the 1920s to the 1950s. The 2026 edition runs from 12–16 February, marking the festival's 19th year.
The festival spans five days of classes, evening parties, live performances, and competitions. The Dance Camp runs Thursday through Monday, with classes from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm each day. More than 300 workshops are offered across all levels—beginner, beginner/intermediate, intermediate, intermediate/advanced, advanced, and competition—allowing dancers to build their own schedules. Each day consists of four 60-minute classes, with three slots per dance and level, plus taster classes in additional styles and special themes such as history, aerials, dips, and routines.
Beginners are welcomed with dedicated beginner tracks in Boogie Woogie, Lindy Hop, Balboa, Shag, Rockabilly Jive, Blues, Charleston, and Solo Dance. Each track consists of three progressive classes; dancers can start any day as each is self-contained. Introduction swing classes are also offered free on Saturday and Sunday evenings (19:00–19:30) at the Deutsches Theater before the bands begin, covering Boogie Woogie, Lindy Hop, Rockabilly Jive, Collegiate Shag, and Solo Charleston.
The festival brings 73 of the world's best international teachers, including Chester Whitmore (USA) as special guest. Teachers come from across the globe—the USA, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Norway, Poland, Australia, and many other countries—and teach in English. Instructors rotate partners during class to maximize learning.
Evening and night venues feature world-class live bands and DJs. Two nights of dances are held at the marvelous ballrooms of the Deutsches Theater in Munich's city center: the Rock That Swing Ball on Saturday and the Jamboree Ball on Sunday. Additional evening events include In The Mood on Thursday, Hep Cats Night on Friday, and Jitterbug Hop on Monday, held at venues including Künstlerhaus and Vintage Club. After-hours parties run throughout the week. A vintage market and massage services are available during the day.
What to expect
Your first visit
You'll arrive for morning classes in a structured dance camp or join a free introduction class before evening bands begin. Classes run 11:00 am–5:00 pm, taught in English by international masters. Evenings feature live bands, DJs, and dancing at multiple venues, including two nights at the Deutsches Theater's grand ballrooms.
