About this studio
Rumberos is a dance company based at 216 State Street in New Haven that teaches and performs Salsa, Mambo, Tango, Belly Dance, Swing, Samba, and Hip Hop. The studio is run by Executive Director Jeff Hudson and draws instructors and performers from Puerto Rico, Colombia, Chile, Barbados, Brazil, and the United States — a deliberately multicultural approach reflected in their teaching and performances.
The studio offers adult beginner salsa fundamentals boot camp crash courses and adult beginner bachata fundamentals boot camp crash courses, alongside equivalent kids' programmes. Class passes for both kids and adults can be bought online. Rumberos also runs Salsa Haven / Latin Wednesdays at VIBES (99 Orange Street, New Haven), a social dancing venue with a beautiful wood floor, spacious room, and brand new sound system where salsa and bachata are played.
Beyond weekly classes, Rumberos has performed at the Arts and Ideas Festival (New Haven), the Shubert "Day of Dance" (New Haven), the Connecticut Salsa Festival (Stamford), the Boston Salsa Congress, Latin Rhythms Performance Fundraiser (Bridgeport), Bottega's "Carnivale Night" (New Haven), and "Que Chevere" (a television performance at the Terrace Club, Stamford). The company has also choreographed for the New Haven Ballet at the Shubert.
Youth education is a cornerstone of their work. Rumberos has led workshops and performances at Fox Lane Middle School's Rainbow Arts Day (Bedford, NY), Fair Haven Elementary School's Latin music and dance day, New Haven elementary school events, and Camp Meechimuk (Marlborough) — where they run interactive teamwork and leadership experiences for kids affected by AIDS, alongside salsa workshops and performances.
The studio offers private and private group classes by appointment. They also arrange corporate celebrations, weddings, quinceañeros, and parties, and provide nightclub promotion services. Gift certificates are available.
