About this studio
Spoon of Sugar is a kids' dance and performing arts studio in the Ramsay SE area of Calgary, founded by Rita Rebetskaya, a professional dancer, choreographer and teacher trained in Moscow. Rebetskaya graduated from the school-studio affiliated with the Igor Moiseyev Ballet and performed with a renowned dance company around the world for 15 years. She also studied at GITIS (Russian University of Theatre Arts) and taught at the Ilze Liepa Academy before moving to Calgary in 2021, where she completed a professional dance program at Decidedly Jazz Danceworks. She now teaches ballet, character dance and physical foundation at both Alberta Ballet School and University of Calgary.
Classes span ages 18 months to 16 years and include ballet (ages 3–7 and 8+), jazz (ages 5–10), contemporary (ages 8–16), hip-hop (ages 8–16), gymnastics (ages 3–8), singing (ages 7–15), theatre (ages 7–10), textile craft arts (ages 7+), and a parent-toddler course for ages 18 months to 3 years. Each class builds specific skills: ballet classes focus on basic positions, exercises and creative expression; jazz develops dance techniques and performance abilities; contemporary emphasises self-expression, flexibility and emotional storytelling; hip-hop builds rhythm and confidence through foundational grooves and choreography.
The studio is well-equipped with plenty of easily accessible parking. During the academic season (September to May), students perform twice, with the final annual concert held on a professional theatre stage. Performance opportunities help children develop self-expression, self-confidence, discipline, teamwork and the courage to perform in public. The studio's teaching team includes Steven Conde (theatre), Darya Ivanova (contemporary and gymnastics), Autumn Thom (hip-hop), Stephanie Jurkova-Abaco (toddler courses), Jocelyn Mah (theatre movement), Maxim Vinogradov and Liza Kireeva (singing), and Maria Basenko (stage design).
Classes begin at $20 CAD per class. The studio offers discounts for students participating in multiple classes and for second and third children; contact them directly to discuss options. Group sizes are limited to ensure quality instruction.
