About this studio
Studio A Dance began 41 years ago in the dining room of a Los Feliz apartment, originally called Terrance Curtis Dance. It has since grown into a thriving multi-studio space at 2306 Hyperion Ave, where Bill Brown (sole proprietor since 2003) purchased the building in 2014 and renamed it Hyperion Arts. The studio houses two dance studios—the Magnolia (front) and Oak Room (back)—accessed through a breezeway on the right side of the building.
The studio operates on a unique model: a dozen or so independent teachers rent space and run their own programmes. This means each instructor sets their own rates, schedule, and class descriptions. You'll find a wide range of adult classes across ballet (beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels), jazz, hip-hop, contemporary dance, yoga (Ashtanga Glassell), pilates (Equilibrium and Mat Pilates), stretching (Comfort Level), cardio (BodyBlast), and modern jazz. Several instructors also teach fencing. Classes run from early morning (7 AM start on weekdays) through evening, with some sessions available both in-person and via streaming.
Kids and young adults can take ballet through Silver Lake Ballet School (with Ms Helen), fencing (beginner through high school levels with Victor), and Music Together classes for young children with adults. The studio successfully navigated the pandemic with nine virtual classes per week in 2020–2021.
Bill Brown himself teaches Jazz (in-person or stream), Body Blast (in-person and stream), and Comfort Level (stretch). Hannah Zlomke offers hip-hop, heels, and wedding dance classes including private lessons. Other instructors include Cati Jean (adult ballet), Helen Nasillski (ballet and pointe), Cristine (contemporary), Katie M (ballet), Jordan (pilates), Rocket (yoga), and others. The venue is also available for rental, and Hannah Zlomke specialises in wedding dance preparation.
What to expect
Your first visit
You'll enter through a breezeway on the right side of the Hyperion Arts building and find two studios. Studio history
Studio A Dance began 41 years ago in a Los Feliz apartment dining room as Terrance Curtis Dance, with classes growing from five students. It moved through a series of locations (including Hillhurst Ave and a community center) before settling at the current Hyperion Ave space with two studios. In 2003, Bill Brown became sole proprietor following Terrance's death from leukemia. Brown purchased the building in 2014 and renamed it Hyperion Arts, installing a stained glass window in the back studio that replicates Terrance's painting The Clown. The studio sustained operations through the pandemic with nine weekly virtual classes.
