About this studio

SupermurgaNati is a teaching and performing collaborative centred on swing dance, founded by Joel Domoe in 2023 as a way to reconnect with Cincinnati's dance community after a several-year hiatus. The organisation is now partnered with Delaan Sumler, who brings a focus on bringing swing dance to a broader community and creating inclusive spaces for different music genres and ability levels.

The core offering is SwouZy Blues, a swing dance fusion social event series held at Hoffner Lodge on 4120 Hamilton Ave (2nd Floor). SwouZy Blues happens around major holidays — Memorial Day, Labor Day, and MLK Day weekends — and features instructional dance classes, live music, and social dancing. The name comes from four foundational music genres: Swing, Soul, Zydeco, and Blues. Each event runs from midday through late evening, typically noon to 1am, with multiple rounds of classes followed by live music sets and DJ dancing.

Classes span multiple levels and fusion styles. Recent events have offered Lindy Hop (including variants like Groove Lindy and Lindy Slow Jam), Blues Dance (including Solo Blues, Stretch & Compression, and Slow Bal), Collegiate Shag, Balboa/Bal-Swing, Zydeco, West Coast Swing, Argentine Tango, Tango-Swing Fusion, Tango Ideas to Soul Music, Partner Charleston, Soul Dance Sampler, and Vernacular Jazz. Most classes cater to either all levels or specific intermediate/advanced brackets. Icebreaker lessons at no extra cost introduce all attendees to the evening's themes.

Instructing staff rotate and often travel; recent faculty have included Aaron Mabson (Lexington, KY), Jay Sheaffer (Chicago, IL), Shannon Varner (Columbus, OH), Delaan Sumler and Joel Domoe (Cincinnati, OH), Travis Hartman (Dayton, OH), Leah Hill (Dayton, OH), Rachel Payne (Cincinnati, OH), and Michael Wizer & Julie Barnett from Tango Northside (Cincinnati, OH). Live music is typically provided by ensembles such as The Sonny Hill Trio and The Noah Wotherspoon Band. DJ sets run late into the night.

Private lessons are available through Joel Domoe and teaching partners (normally Claire Danna, Melanie Myers, or Sam Uebel) at $120/hour for up to four students, or $80/hour for Joel alone while travelling. The rate includes two instructors when in Cincinnati.

Studio history

SupermurgaNati emerged in 2023 when founder Joel Domoe returned to dancing after a several-year hiatus due to parenting, personal priorities, and grappling with depression. After reconnecting with the swing dance community in Cincinnati and nationwide, he realised his passion for teaching, promoting, and community building. Delaan Sumler joined as partner, having started his dance career in 2018 and later studying music education to bring swing dance to a broader Cincinnati audience.
