About this studio
Winter Dance Company offers quality and affordable dance instruction for ages 12 months to adult. The studio is dedicated to bringing dance to Baton Rouge and surrounding areas, with a mission to help each dancer experience creativity, performance quality, style, and musicality in a positive atmosphere.
Classes run Monday to Wednesday evenings from 5:30pm to 8:30pm during the season (September 14th to June 17th), with select Saturday specialty classes on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays. The schedule spans all levels and ages: three-year-olds start with Combo #1 (Ballet & Tap), while teenagers and adults can train in Contemporary/African Jazz (audition-only), Ballet/Pre-pointe, and Liturgical/Mime. Most classes are one hour; Mommy & Me is 45 minutes.
The teaching staff includes Artistic Director Winter D. McCray and Studio Manager Tina Turner, with lead instructor Janèsa Marcelle heading the competition teams. Other instructors include Hallie Russell, Alayna Henry, Jasmine Hebert, Elisha Jenkins, Chaneyra Bradley, Kirsten Thomas, Tori Brooks, and Nataklemia Green. The studio runs three competitive teams—FlyGirls, Expressions of Praise, and Legends In The Making—alongside regular classes.
Dancers perform at a mid-year and end-of-season recital (recent themes include "90's House Party"), plus community programs, events, competitions, and productions. The studio offers private and group instruction in ballet, pre-pointe/pointe, jazz, tap, hip hop, liturgical/mime, cheernastics, lyrical, step, HBCU-style dance, and contemporary. Summer camp is available. Studio rental is also offered.
What to expect
Your first visit
Drop in for classes running Monday to Wednesday evenings (5:30pm–8:30pm) or select Saturday mornings. You'll find age-specific classes with clear progressions: younger children start with basic combinations, while older dancers train in specialized styles like African Jazz, hip hop, and ballet technique.
