Biography

Michael Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana in 1958 and began performing with his brothers in The Jackson 5 at age six. His childhood performances already displayed extraordinary rhythmic precision and stage presence, but it was his solo career beginning in 1979 that would transform him into the most influential performer in pop music history.

Jackson's innovation was making dance inseparable from pop music. Before him, musicians performed relatively static stage shows; after him, choreography became essential to pop performance. His 1983 Motown 25 performance of Billie Jean, featuring the debut of the moonwalk, is considered one of the most important moments in television history.

The Thriller music video (1983), choreographed by Michael Peters, elevated the music video from promotional clip to cinematic art form. Its zombie dance sequence became the most imitated choreography in pop culture. Jackson continued pushing boundaries with Bad, Smooth Criminal (featuring his gravity-defying lean), and elaborate concert tours.

Jackson synthesized street dance, jazz, mime, and theatrical movement into a style that was entirely his own. His precision, his ability to isolate body parts, and his sense of dramatic timing influenced every pop performer who followed, from Usher to Justin Timberlake to BTS.
