Shobana Jeyasingh

Shobana Jeyasingh is an Indian-born, London-based choreographer and artistic director whose work has fundamentally enlarged the language and contexts of British contemporary dance. Born in Madras in 1957, she spent parts of her childhood and education in Sri Lanka and Malaysia before coming to England in 1981. Those years of geographic mobility shaped her artistic concerns: place, translation, cultural memory and the instability of fixed identity became working materials in her choreography rather than decorative themes. She trained in Bharatanatyam with Valluvoor Samaraj Pillai while also pursuing academic study in English literature, a dual formation that would define her practice.

After postgraduate study at the University of Sussex, Jeyasingh shifted her focus to choreography. Her 1988 quartet *Configurations*, created with a commissioned score by Michael Nyman, announced an approach that did not simply present Bharatanatyam as heritage. Instead, it placed trained bodies, musical structures and modern theatrical space in active argument with one another. The work established a signature method: Bharatanatyam-derived articulation and rhythmic precision were displaced from recital convention and recomposed with contemporary weight, interruption and ensemble counterpoint.

She founded Shobana Jeyasingh Dance in 1989. Early works such as *Making of Maps* and *Romance … with Footnotes* earned a Time Out choreography award and the Prudential Award for Dance respectively, while the company began touring internationally, including appearances at Jacob's Pillow. From the outset, Jeyasingh created work for other companies and institutions alongside her own repertory.

During the 1990s and 2000s, her practice expanded beyond the theatre into broadcasts, networked performance, outdoor architecture and digital design. *Duets with Automobiles* was commissioned with Arts Council England and the BBC; *[h]Interland* linked live dance between the UK and India as a webcast; *Counterpoint* placed twenty dancers in Somerset House's fountain courtyard and was filmed in 3D. These settings were choreographic constraints, not neutral backdrops: circulation, surveillance, crowds, urban geometry and mediated presence became materials for composition.

Her later work has repeatedly engaged with history through contemporary bodies. *TooMortal* premiered through Dance Umbrella at the Venice Biennale Dance and appeared in the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. *Bayadère — The Ninth Life* interrogated the colonial and balletic histories surrounding the bayadère image. *Contagion*, created in 2018, responded to the 1918 influenza pandemic through an installation for eight women, archive material and digital visuals. *Staging Schiele* used Egon Schiele's self-images to consider the staged body, vulnerability and the act of looking.

Recognition of both the choreography and the institution has been sustained. Jeyasingh received an MBE in 1995 and was appointed CBE for services to dance in the 2020 New Year Honours. In the same year, Shobana Jeyasingh Dance won Best Independent Company at the Critics' Circle National Dance Awards. The company has produced more than sixty works and continues under her artistic direction.
