Tanya Burka

Tanya Burka is an aerial artist, choreographer, coach and creative-production leader whose career bridges rigorous technical training in both engineering and contemporary circus. A U.S. citizen and Canadian resident, Burka trained in gymnastics from childhood before earning a Bachelor of Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2003, where she competed as a varsity gymnast. Rather than leaving her analytical foundation behind, she has consistently integrated technical reasoning—apparatus mechanics, risk management, repeatable training—into her artistic practice. After MIT, Burka pursued full-time training in Montreal, graduating in 2006 from the École nationale de cirque with a diploma focused on aerial acts and a minor in contortion.

Burka developed an international performance career across major touring productions and festivals. Her credits include the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics opening ceremony, Wonderbolt Circus touring work, and Cirque du Soleil's *Quidam* from 2011 to 2013, where she performed contortion in aerial silks. She later appeared in Cirque Éloize's *Monaco the Show* (2015), presented a self-choreographed solo silks piece at Sans Filet in Montreal (2016), and toured internationally with Cirque du Soleil's *TORUK: The First Flight* from 2017 to 2019, where she performed as Tsyal, a female Na'vi character.

Throughout her performing career, Burka also built collaborative aerial vocabulary with Sidonie Adamson in Duo Vespertilio. The duo specializes in dynamic hoop work, combining spin sequences, flexibility and porting passages—weight-sharing transitions that make each artist alternately base, counterweight and moving partner. This work has appeared at major festivals and demonstrates how duo apparatus alters the technical problem of apparatus control and partner coordination.

Burka's influence extends significantly into coaching and production. She has worked as a coach across festivals, schools and studios internationally, served as artistic counselor and stage manager on multiple productions, and co-directed and choreographed *Cover Me* for Vancouver Circus Fest in 2014. She completed a McGill University professional-development certificate in executive production for creative industries in 2022 and has since taken artistic-director and stage-management roles on contemporary-circus projects. Her career demonstrates how technical reasoning and analytical organization can remain central to an artistic life across performance, teaching and production leadership.
