About this studio
Boston Dance Studios is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing high-quality dance education across more than 15 different techniques and styles of movement. Founded in January 2023 by Tara Brown, an artistic director with decades of training in multiple dance styles, BDS emerged from a mission to create a welcoming and collaborative arts space where all people and dance styles are celebrated. Tara Brown moved to Boston from New York in 2020 and, after encountering challenges finding an inclusive training space, opened BDS in a 5th-floor studio directly across from North Station and TD Garden.
Classes are taught by more than 25 experienced faculty members and guest instructors across styles including street jazz, heels, hip hop, locking, house, and contemporary. Classes are open to dancers aged 14 and up (17+ for heels classes). The studio operates Monday to Saturday from 9am to 10pm, and Sunday 10am to 7pm, with accessible class times designed to suit your schedule. Single classes cost $25, with discounts available for students, military-affiliated individuals, seniors, and Card to Culture cardholders. You can commit to training through 5 or 10-class packs (priced at $85 and $155) or a monthly membership at $99, which grants access to up to 12 classes per month plus discounted workshops and merchandise.
Beyond drop-in classes, BDS offers rigorous training programmes for those ready to take their practice further. The Pre-Professional Program is a 3-month intensive for dancers 17 and older, providing unlimited access to 17–20 weekly classes, work with professional guest choreographers, and real-world industry knowledge. The Performance Project is a seasonal training and performance initiative led by select BDS faculty artists, culminating in a live performance with professional footage provided to participants. A Work Study Program is available on a rolling basis for movers of all levels (must be 18+) to earn credits toward class by contributing to studio operations.
The studio regularly hosts workshops and special events featuring visiting choreographers and industry professionals. Past events have included masterclasses and choreography workshops with professionals who have worked with artists including Beyoncé, Ariana Grande, and performers on the MTV VMA's and Billboard Music Awards. BDS also presents full-scale performances: the Performance Project Showcase and The Summer Showcase feature dancers of all ages and experience levels from across New England performing dynamic choreography in styles ranging from hip hop to heels to contemporary.
The space comprises three rental studios available for auditions, private training, photography and film shoots, and more. Studio 1 and Studio 2 are each $90 per hour and feature mirrors, bluetooth-connected speakers, and barres; Studio 1 has marley flooring while Studio 2 has wood flooring. Studio 3 rents for $50 per hour and features a brick background ideal for filming and photography. All studios are equipped with bluetooth-connected speakers. Rental hours run Monday to Saturday, 9am to 9:30pm. BDS is committed to affordability and accessibility, participating in the Mass Cultural Council's Card to Culture program, which allows EBT, WIC, and ConnectorCare cardholders to access classes for $10.
What to expect
Your first visit
On your first visit, arrive early to allow time to check in; latecomers cannot join more than 15 minutes after class starts. Wear comfortable, stretchy clothing, remove dangling jewelry, and bring dance shoes (only to be worn in the studio). The studio enforces a no-phone, no food or drink (except water) policy in classes and maintains a respectful, inclusive environment with zero tolerance for harassment or bullying.

Studio history
Boston Dance Studios opened in January 2023 after founder and artistic director Tara Brown moved from New York to Boston in 2020. Seeking a location to teach heels—a style that gave her community and belonging—Brown struggled to find a space where all dance styles were genuinely welcome. In October 2022, she found an old dance studio listing and was inspired to transform it into a welcoming arts destination offering high-quality dance education. She signed a lease in December 2022 and launched BDS the following month.
