About this studio
City Dance Studios was founded in 2003 by Sandy Lee. The studio has moved several times across San Francisco—from Chase Court (shared with City Ballet School for 15 years), to an Annex location in SOMA in 2010, to Howard Street in 2019, and now to the current main location at 60 Brady Street since October 2021. The Brady Street space has tall ceilings and industrial architecture that lets the studio host its own performances and battles.
The studio specializes in Hip Hop Choreo classes, taught by accomplished Bay Area artists. They also teach urban dance forms including Popping, House, Breaking, Locking, Tutting and Hip Hop Freestyle, plus a growing selection of Jazz, Tap, KPOP and Contemporary. City Dance is known for hosting master classes from world-class dancers. Past guests have included Mr. Wiggles, Buddha Stretch, Marjory Smarth, Caleaf Sellers, Salah, Les Twins, Ejoe Wilson, Brooklyn Terry, Poe One, Iron Monkey, Kid David, SBR, Suga Pop, Ian Eastwood, Mariel Martin, Jillian Meyers, Tony Testa, Larkin Poynton, Boogie Frantick, King Charles, Slim Boogie, and dancers from NDT2.
The studio produces three shows per year where students perform with their instructors and guest artists. In 2015, City Dance presented Nederlands Dance Theater 2 to a sold-out house at the Palace of Fine Arts, with accompanying master classes. Classes operate from two locations: the main studio at 60 Brady Street and the Annex at 1420 Harrison Street.
