About this studio

Hiphophuis has been the centre for meeting and development for young creative and artistic communities for over 20 years, with hip-hop as a unifying factor. The studio operates from Boomgaardsstraat 46 in Rotterdam, open Monday to Friday 10:00–22:00.

Classes span breaking, house, popping, locking, waacking, krump, freestyle, dancehall, afro, heels, capoeira, and open practice sessions. You can filter by style, day, and age group (5–8, 6–12, 9–12, 5–12, 12+, 13–16, 16+, 25+). Instructors include Chris (breaking), Joel (house), Pop-I (popping), Joshua (locking), Neha (popping), Shahin (waacking), Jr. Brui5er/Brandon (krump), Laquelle (heels), Shirley (afro), Pedro (capoeira), and many others. Classes are led by community leaders and culture builders with international experience. All classes were free from January 19–23.

Beyond regular classes, Hiphophuis runs courses and deep dives that connect dance back to hip-hop culture and its history. The studio emphasises that hip-hop is more than movement—it's a living conversation across styles, generations, and roots. Events and parties are a core part of the programme; the studio hosted the Contact High exhibition (August 11–26) celebrating hip-hop's 50th birthday, featuring legendary photography and opening-weekend talks, parties, and live performances.

The philosophy centres on arts, culture, and community. Classes support self-expression and authenticity, teaching the culture alongside the moves. Mentorship often leads to partnership, with participants going on to roles as dancers, organisers, teachers, and artists. The studio positions itself as a space where hip-hop serves as a driver of innovation, both in what you create and how it interacts with audiences.
