Repertory Dance Theatre (RDT) is the nation's oldest and most successful modern dance repertory company. Founded in 1966 in Salt Lake City through a cooperative effort involving the Salt Lake City community, the University of Utah, and a major grant from the Rockefeller Foundation, RDT was established as the first successful modern dance repertory company in America. The vision came from Virginia Tanner, an internationally known leader in children's dance, who believed that great choreographers should work with dancers outside the major metropolitan areas.
RDT operates as both a professional performance company and a teaching studio. The company maintains one of the largest collections of modern dance classics in the world and functions as a museum and contemporary gallery representing the scope and diversity of modern dance, past and present. Known worldwide for this collection, RDT preserves historical works while commissioning and performing new choreography. The company has pushed the boundaries of modern dance for over 60 years while celebrating its legacy.
RDT's Dance Center on Broadway, which began in 1994, offers adult classes (ages 16+) in the evenings and weekends. Classes are designed as drop-in with no long-term commitment required. The current schedule includes Beginning Modern, Ballet, Hip Hop, Modern, Jazz, Flamenco, Bollywood, Guinea (West African), and Prime Movement (for ages 40+). All classes are taught by professional instructors and are open to all levels, with no previous dance experience expected. Teachers work with students at every level, and beginners are welcome.
The Dance Center is located at 138 West 300 South in Salt Lake City at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center. RDT also produces performance seasons, community-based programs, workshops, creative aging classes, education programs, and formal dance outreach. The company maintains a commitment to arts-in-education and offers year-round classes serving people of all ages. RDT is currently in its 61st season (2026-2027) and continues its mission of creating, performing, perpetuating, and appreciating modern dance while serving as a resource center and laboratory for contemporary dancers, choreographers, visual artists, writers, and composers.
What to expect
Your first visit
Registration online is required before attending; you will receive a door code via email. Enter through the main doors of the Rose Wagner with your code, head down the hall and take the second right past the Black Box Theatre. The West Studio will be your first stop. Teachers check you in on an iPad, and you can leave your belongings on shelves inside the studio. Classes welcome all levels and no previous experience is necessary.

The Dance Center faculty includes Jonathan Kim (Dancer), Iswarya (Bollywood Teacher), Solange Gomes (Flamenco Teacher), Michè Smith (Hip Hop Teacher), Sasha Rydlizky (Modern Teacher), and Stephanie Thomas (Jazz Teacher). The professional company dancers include Ursula Perry, Trung "Daniel" Do, Lindsey Faber, Megan O'Brien, Caleb Daly, Jacob Lewis, Caitlyn Richter, and Alexander Pham. Executive and Artistic leadership is shared by Nicholas Cendese and Lynne Larson.

Studio history
RDT was founded on July 1, 1966, with a grant of $370,000—the largest sum the Rockefeller Foundation had ever given to dance at that time. The company emerged from Virginia Tanner's vision and was structured experimentally as a cooperative, self-directing company where dancers received a living wage. This was virtually unheard of in dance history. In 1976, two dancers were appointed Co-Artistic Directors (Kay Clark and Linda C. Smith), and in 1983, Linda C. Smith became sole Artistic Director, preserving the continuity of Tanner's dream. RDT was the first successful modern dance repertory company in the nation and remains a leader in preserving American modern dance classics while nurturing new choreographers.
