About this studio
The Hartford Dance Collective has been curating performances and teaching contemporary movement since July 2017. Based in Studio B at Parkville Sounds (1800 Park Street, Hartford), the Collective bridges dance and community by hosting open adult movement classes and producing performances in diverse locations across Connecticut—from the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art to Mortensen Riverfront Plaza, Real Art Ways, and local breweries.
The studio runs a year-round class schedule with both weekly series and pop-up workshops, taught by Resident Artists and visiting instructors. Classes welcome all bodies and experience levels: beginners, people returning to movement after years away, those managing injuries, and experienced dancers looking to train. The philosophy is simple: everyone can dance, and everyone should. All classes are for adults aged 16 and up. Pre-registration is required through the WellnessLiving Achieve app; classes need a minimum of 5 participants to run.
Private lessons are available for all ages and abilities, covering Contemporary, Modern, Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Street Jazz, Heels, Tap, Improvisation, audition prep, choreography, dance conditioning, and movement for singers and musicians. The Collective also books performances for events and offers wedding dance choreography.
The studio space itself is a 2,000-square-foot, sound-treated room with 12-foot ceilings, a 42-foot mirror wall, floating bamboo floors, a 55-foot floor-to-ceiling Rose Brand stage curtain, dimmable track lighting and LED stage lighting, seven portable ballet barres, natural light with blackout curtains, and a Yamaha G1 Baby Grand Piano. Black or white marley is available upon request. The room opens to ground level with double doors for easy load-in. Studio B can be rented for rehearsals, classes, video shoots, or performances through Parkville Sounds; HDC artists receive a 10% discount.
The Collective's largest initiative is the annual Hartford Dance Festival, held in August at Elizabeth Park—a free event that has grown to feature 25+ performing groups, making it the largest free dance festival in Connecticut. The Collective also curates smaller performances throughout the year and brings professional dancers to Hartford, including artists from Pilobolus, David Dorfman Dance, the Limon Company, the Radio City Rockettes, Doug Varone and Dancers, and the Merce Cunningham Trust. The organization is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit committed to advancing female-identifying choreographers and dancers and building an inclusive environment across gender, sexuality, culture, ability, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status.
