About this studio
Victoria's School of Dance and Rhythm teaches creative movement, ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, and tumbling at the Wightman School Community Building in Pittsburgh. Classes run for children from age 3 through teen and adult levels, with a spring recital in June and fall classes beginning in September.
The studio is led by Victoria Hughey Brooks, MBA, owner and instructor who has taught creative movement, modern, ballet, jazz, and tap for many years. Victoria studied modern dance and ballet at the Selma Burke Art Center and the African American Dance Studio in East Liberty as a child, took a master's class with Otis Salid (original cast member of Broadway's "The Wiz"), and attended a master's class at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York City. As an adult, she studied ballet at the Carnegie Institute of Pittsburgh and Leaps and Bounds in College Park, MD, trained under Miss Audrey Trojanowski at Graceful Steps Ballet where she was a soloist, and has studied jazz and tap for the last 16 years under Kimberly Curtin at Wilkins School Community Center. She currently studies ballet under Bernadette Smith at WSCC.
The teaching staff includes Tanya Sheffield, who holds degrees in Psychology and Child Development from the University of Pittsburgh and has performed with Helios Arts and Ampersand Dance Theatre Company as well as Pittsburgh Dance Arts, where she taught and choreographed from 2007–2011. She now teaches ballet, tap, and jazz to students ages 3 to 93. Francesca Moux teaches children's ballet and tumbling; she has danced since age three, competed in dance competitions with Studio G Dance Center, won the title of Miss Showbiz in 2016, and was first runner-up for overall soloist. She has trained under notable dancers including Comfort Fedoke, Alex Wong, and Audrey Case.
Classes are structured by age and skill level. Creative Movement is for 3-year-olds and develops gross motor skills through beginning ballet movement, creative and imaginative dance exercises, songs, and games. Pre-Ballet and Pre-Tap (ages 4–5) introduce barre work, across-the-floor combinations, grace, musicality, rhythm, and coordination. Children's Ballet and Tap focuses on posture, grace, flexibility, and strength with basic positions and fundamental techniques. Teen/Adult Ballet covers barre technique, port de bras, adagio, and allegro movements at beginning to advanced levels. Tumbling teaches beginner's acrobatics and artistic gymnastics on the floor. Children's Jazz develops strong motor skills and blends movement with rhythm into fast-paced routines. Hip Hop is high energy, teaching fundamentals with isolations, stretching, and popular music, covering rhythm, upper body strength, and funky footwork (Jazz is a prerequisite). Teen Tap focuses on clarity of sounds, speed, dynamics, musicality, time steps, and improvisational exercises.
The studio offers a spring recital (June 7, 2026) and summer terms in June–July. Studio space rental, birthday parties with dance instruction, and wedding choreography are available. All communication with families is via email and internal mail.
