Biography
Caleb Teicher is a dancer, choreographer and curator who treats tap and jazz dance as music, building interdisciplinary concert works that bring contemporary Lindy Hop's social and improvisatory values to major stages through credited collaboration. They/them.
Teicher's relationship with Jacob's Pillow began in 2010, immediately after high school, as a student in the inaugural Tap Program at The School at Jacob's Pillow. That training placed them in direct contact with both tap history and a major presenting institution. In 2011, they became a founding member of Michelle Dorrance's Dorrance Dance and received a Bessie Award for Outstanding Individual Performance in *A Shared Evening*, choreographed by Michelle Dorrance and Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards. During the same period, Teicher performed in contemporary dance, musical theater and swing work with The Chase Brock Experience, The Bang Group, Syncopated City Dance Company and an international production of *West Side Story*.
In 2015, Teicher established Caleb Teicher & Company as a laboratory for placing tap, Lindy Hop and vernacular jazz in contemporary concert structures. Works have been commissioned and presented at the Joyce Theater, New York City Center, Jacob's Pillow, the Kennedy Center, Works & Process at the Guggenheim and Lincoln Center. Musical collaboration is compositional, not decorative. In *Bzzz*, Teicher and tap dancers worked with world-champion beatboxer Chris Celiz, setting two forms of embodied percussion in conversation. In *More Forever* and *Counterpoint*, Teicher's dancing entered a sustained partnership with pianist-composer Conrad Tao; Tao and Teicher received a Bessie in 2019 for the sound design and music composition of *More Forever*.
*SW!NG OUT* emerged from the 2019 National Dance Project process and was conceived by a six-person brain trust: Evita Arce, LaTasha Barnes, Nathan Bugh, Macy Sullivan, Caleb Teicher and Eyal Vilner. Teicher directed the work, which joined choreography and improvisation with live music from the Eyal Vilner Big Band and invited audiences into a closing social-dance jam. The work premiered in 2021 and was recorded by Jacob's Pillow with the full credited ensemble.
Teicher's collaborations also cross into popular music and symphonic performance, including choreography for Regina Spektor's Broadway residency, work with Ben Folds, solo appearances with the National Symphony Orchestra and Philadelphia Orchestra, and choreography for AJR's "Bang" music video. Recent projects include the tap-and-beatbox music-theater work *B-Z-Z-Z* and *Ear To The Ground* with percussive dancer Nic Gareiss. Teicher also founded the SW!NG OUT Community Fund, which has distributed over $160,000 to organizations sustaining New York social swing dance.
In 2026, Works & Process named Teicher its inaugural Artist Curator in Residence, formalizing a dimension long present in their practice: convening artists, directing interdisciplinary projects and helping institutions support the conditions under which dance can be made and shared.
Legacy & Impact
Teicher matters because they make relationships among dancing, music and community structurally audible and visible. Their tap practice treats the dancer as a musician; their interdisciplinary duets allow sound and movement to alter one another; and *SW!NG OUT* presents Lindy Hop as a living social practice. Equally important, their credited brain trusts, community funds and curatorial work model an artistic career built through shared authority rather than individual genius.
