About this studio
Ballet Pensacola is both a professional dance company and a comprehensive training academy, anchored at 400 S. Jefferson Street in Pensacola's Cultural Center. The organisation operates two distinct but interconnected arms: a resident professional company of 18 world-class professional dancers from across the globe, and the Academy, the region's largest training program for dancers ages 3–18.
The Academy is structured in divisions designed to progress students systematically. The Pre-Primary Division introduces the youngest dancers (ages 3+) to ballet fundamentals and creativity. The Training Division develops disciplined, creative, and technical dancers through a curriculum that draws from multiple historic ballet syllabi including Cecchetti, Vaganova, Bournonville, and Balanchine methods. New students to the Training Division must audition for correct placement. The Pre-Professional Program serves advanced dancers ready to push technique and artistry to the next level, with close mentoring from company members. Ballet for Adults classes welcome ages 16 and up, from absolute beginners to experienced movers, in a supportive, judgment-free environment.
Beyond ballet, the Academy offers specialty classes in Tap, Jazz, Musical Theatre, Contemporary, and Modern. Tap is offered at multiple age levels (Primary ages 5–8 through ages 13 and above). Jazz for ages 7–11 teaches dynamic, syncopated movements with musical precision. Musical Theatre for ages 7–11 fosters storytelling through dance and stylized movement. Contemporary (ages 11+ and 14+) synthesizes techniques with emphasis on floor work and emotional expression. Modern explores grounded movements, suspension and release, contractions, curved shapes, and abstract relationships to music.
The professional company performs three to four major productions each season: a fall performance, The Nutcracker each December, a special winter event, and a spring finale. Performances take place at the historic Saenger Theatre and the Clark Family Cultural Center. Academy students showcase their growth each spring during the Academy Student Showcase and Academy Gala, and regularly share the stage with professional company members. Ballet Pensacola extends its reach through performances in schools, hospitals, festivals, gallery nights, special community events, and tours across the region.
The organisation was founded in 1978 by Italian-trained dancer and teacher Gioia Michelotti as Kaleidoscope Dance Theatre. The academy was established in 1980. In 1989, Kaleidoscope presented Pensacola's first Nutcracker. In 2003, the Dance Chance Scholarship program was implemented to give deserving students opportunities to study dance. In 2007, a resident professional company was established. In 2021, Darren McIntyre was named Artistic Director and expanded the professional company. The entire organisation was renamed Ballet Pensacola in 2005. Leadership includes Company Director Veronica Ramirez, Academy Director Debi Janea, Operations Director Sara Williamson, and Production Manager Dominic Krippes.

Kaleidoscope presented Pensacola's first Nutcracker in 1989 and became the resident dance company at the Pensacola Cultural Center in the mid-1990s. The senior performing company was named Ballet Pensacola in the mid-1990s, and the entire organisation took that name in 2005. The Dance Chance Scholarship program launched in 2003 to support deserving students. A resident professional company was established in 2007. In 2021, Darren McIntyre was named Artistic Director and expanded the professional company to approximately 20 dancers from around the globe.
