About this studio
Beyond the Barre Dance Academy opened in 2016 in Smithfield, Rhode Island. The studio describes itself as more than a dance school—a community where dancers, parents and visitors feel at home. The space is designed with a cozy lobby and a 'Dancer Den' homework nook, and the studio has expanded its offerings over time to include competitive programmes and adaptive dance.
Classes run from Baby Bees (ages 14 months to 2.5 years) through to adult programmes. Across all ages, you can study ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop and acrobatics at graded levels. Younger children (ages 3–5 and 5–7) take creative movement, beginner technique and genre introductions. Children aged 8 and up access multi-level classes in ballet (including pointe and pre-pointe), tap, jazz, hip-hop and acro, plus lyrical and contemporary. Adults aged 18+ can join adult jazz, tap, barre and ballet, or adult open classes exploring multiple styles. The studio also runs Buddy Bees, an adaptive dance programme that pairs young dancers with varying needs alongside typically developing peers.
Dancers enrolled in tap, jazz and ballet are evaluated during summer intensives, with invitations to competitive teams extended for the fall season. The studio's competitive teams have achieved recognition including entertainment awards, choreography awards, and national championship titles in teen competitive large group (2023).
Performances take place at the Stadium Theatre in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. The 2026 recital is scheduled for June 25th and 26th. The studio also hosts birthday parties with customized routines, games and mini-performances.
General class requirements include hair worn up and out of the face, no jewellery except small stud earrings, and proper dance attire as specified for each class. Dance shoes and tights are available at Labrie Dance, located at 375 Putnam Pike in Smithfield. The studio is currently accepting new students.
