About this studio
Dance Moves of Charleston operates two studios—one on James Island and one in Nexton—serving over 500 students and families across the Charleston area. The studio's philosophy centres on personal growth and technical training without competition. Classes are available for children from age 2.5 through adults, with youth programming organised by age and level (Preschool through Level 5), and a separate track for adults of all experience levels.
Youth classes cover Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Lyrical, Contemporary, and Modern, with instruction tailored to age-appropriate progression. The Preschool level (ages 2.5–5) introduces foundational styles through Ballet and Tap. Level 1 (ages 5–7) expands into Jazz, Hip Hop, and Lyrical. Higher levels (2–5) add Contemporary and Modern, with Dance Team options for ages 11 and up. All youth dancers participate in a professionally produced end-of-season recital. Private lessons are available across all styles for additional technique work and audition preparation.
Adult classes welcome complete beginners and experienced dancers alike. Offered styles include Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Contemporary, Hip Hop, and Musical Theatre Jazz. Adults can drop in for single classes or commit to multi-class passes and unlimited monthly options. The studio emphasises that no prior experience or dance partner is required.
Beyond regular classes, Dance Moves offers the Dance Moves Youth Company—a by-audition pre-professional programme for committed dancers seeking advanced training and performance opportunities. Summer dance camps run year-round for ages 3 and up, with themed camps and boot camps available. Birthday parties are available both in-studio and as travelling options, with themed dance classes, full setup and cleanup included.
The studio's instructional team includes founder and owner Jessica Beran, alongside experienced educators like Aimee Butsch (Operations Director and DMYC Artistic Director), Education Director Maya Alizzeo, and dedicated instructors such as Jayden Zayas (Ballet), Natalie Davis (Certified Yoga Instructor), and many others. The studio positions itself as body-positive and focused on building confidence, discipline, resilience, and self-worth alongside technical skill.
