About this studio

Flying Cloud Academy of Vintage Dance teaches and performs historical ballroom dances spanning six distinct periods: Regency, Victorian, Late Victorian, Ragtime, Jazz, and 1930s. The academy is dedicated to the preservation, performance, and teaching of authentic historic dance and music, creating a thriving vintage dance community for dancers at all levels.

Classes run in seven-week sessions timed to prepare students for the academy's themed balls. Winter/Spring 2026 classes meet Wednesdays 7:30–8:30 pm from March 4 through April 15 at the Wyoming Fine Arts Center. Sessions cover dance techniques and steps from 1800–1930, taught by experienced instructors alongside Flying Cloud Troupe members. Beginners, experienced dancers, singles, and couples are all welcome; no advanced registration is required. Soft soled shoes are recommended.

The Regency period includes Contradance, Minuet, Quadrille, and Reel. Victorian dancing features Polka, Polonaise, Schottische, Mazurka, and Waltz. Late Victorian encompasses Redowa, Two Step, Cakewalk, and Viennese Waltz. Ragtime introduces Half and Half, Maxixe, One Step, and Tango. Jazz covers Tango, Blues, Charleston, Foxtrot, and Lindy Hop. The 1930s repertoire includes Lindy Hop, Big Apple, Shim Sham, Foxtrot, and Cross-step Waltz. Instruction weaves in period etiquette and music history.

The academy hosts regular balls in period settings. The America 250 Liberty Ball celebrates the US semiquincentennial with Colonial-era dances from 1776, held April 18, 2026 at the Wyoming Fine Arts Center with live music by Joyous Occasions. The 2024–25 season concluded with a 200th-anniversary ball honouring General Lafayette's visit to Cincinnati, featuring dance reconstructions and early 1800s music. Past venues for performances include the Smithsonian Institute, Biltmore Estates, Taft Museum, and Cincinnati Art Museum.

The academy is administered by a membership-elected board serving two-year terms. The Artistic Director is Tamara Anderson. The Flying Cloud troupe is available for themed fundraisers, historical presentations, cultural and educational programmes, and workshops. The academy also organises Vintage Dance Week, with the 45th annual event scheduled for June 13–19, 2027.
