Richmond Dance Center

Richmond Dance Center has been teaching dance in Richmond for over 50 years, founded in 1976. The studio's reputation for quality instruction spans classical ballet, pointe, creative movement, jazz, tap, hip-hop, lyrical/contemporary, modern, and competition skills for children and adults. This reputation is regarded on local, regional, and national levels.

The studio is built on three core values: safety, discipline, and joy. You'll develop strong technique while building confidence, friendship, and a lifelong love for dance. Classes span ages from three years old through adults, with level-appropriate instruction at each stage. Young dancers start with 3 Year Old Ballet and Creative Dance, progressing through child ballet levels I–IV and beyond. Teens and adults can train in advanced jazz, modern, hip-hop, and the specialist Film & Performance course (14+), which investigates the intersection of dance, cinematography, and live performance across multiple genres. There's also Teen Pre-Pointe for dancers with strong technical foundations, and Teen Ballet Advanced Technique for those skipping pointe work.

The teaching team holds degrees in dance instruction. Director Pam Turner studied at the North Carolina School of the Arts and continued in New York. She has taught for Richmond Ballet, Tidewater Ballet, VCU, and the Henrico Center for the Arts, and choreographed for major venues including King's Dominion and Carowinds. She received the 2007 Theresa Pollack Prize for Dance for her contribution to dance in the Richmond Community. Assistant Director Tracy Moody holds a B.F.A. from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, danced for Carnival Cruise Lines, and now directs and choreographs the studio's competition teams. Alicia Olivo teaches modern and film & performance, and ballet instructor Abigail Brunet trained at Richmond Ballet's summer intensive under Jerri Kumery, Ballet Master of Richmond Ballet, and has performed competitively and in Concert Ballet of Virginia and The Nutcracker.

Classes run on a semester system (Fall: September 8–January 17; Spring: January 18–May 9), with the 3 Year Old class running in 7-week quarters. A spring performance involves additional rehearsal time and costume expense. The studio does not observe Monday holidays and does not necessarily follow HCPS holiday schedules. There is a clear dress code: ballet students wear pink tights and black leotards (girls) or black/gray pants with white/black t-shirts (boys); jazz and tap allow any colour leotard but require jazz shoes for jazz and tap shoes for tap. Hair must be off the neck and tied back, with buns required for Child Ballet Level II and above.

Beyond classes, the studio hosts workshops and social events that bring together students, families, and dance enthusiasts to celebrate movement and community.

Classes are structured by age and level, from playful exploration for three-year-olds through advanced technique for teens and adults. Expect clear instruction in a supportive environment focused on technique, musicality, and confidence. Hair must be secured and proper dance shoes required; dress codes are strictly enforced.

Classes for three-year-olds through adults cater to all starting points, with the studio emphasising a nurturing, encouraging environment where confidence builds alongside technique.
