About this studio
Sarita's Dance Studio, Inc. was founded in 1980 and has been serving the south side of San Antonio for over 40 years. The studio offers dance classes in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Ballet Folklorico, and Pre-School Dance, with levels ranging from beginner through advanced, including pointe work. Classes are available for ages 3 and up, with instruction for both children and adults.
Sarita Zúñiga, President and Artistic Director, has over 60 years of experience in dance and fitness. She has taught at Brooks AFB, Kelly AFB, Lackland AFB, Palo Alto College, Harlandale High School, Southwest General Hospital, and the University of Incarnate Word, among others. In 2006, she was honored by the South San Antonio Chamber of Commerce for community leadership. In 2014, Congressman Pete Gallegos presented her with a Congressional Award for providing valuable dance training to San Antonio's Southside residents for 34 years. Sarita is the Founder of Alegría Dance Company, a pre-professional dance company for talented dancers who want to experience professional-level performance.
The teaching staff includes Jocelyn Perez, Studio Manager, who teaches Preschool, Ballet/Tap at levels 0, 1, and 2, Tap at levels 3 and 4, Jazz, and Alegría Junior classes. Jocelyn has danced for 12 years, trained at Sarita's since 2003 in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Pointe, Ballet Folklorico, Contemporary, and Flamenco. She performed with the Moscow Ballet in the Nutcracker in 2006 and trained with the Ballet Conservatory of San Antonio from 2015–2017. Andrea Alshouse is a ballet instructor who trained at Ballet Austin, Virginia School of the Arts, American Ballet Theatre, and Boston Ballet. She danced with Richmond Ballet as a Trainee and performed with Montgomery Ballet and Ballet San Antonio, where she danced featured roles in Dracula, The Nutcracker, Cinderella, Peter Pan, and Giselle.
The studio provides a structured curriculum with clear prerequisites. Pre-School classes teach basic ballet and tap skills with creative movement and motor skill development. Ballet/Tap Levels 0 and 1 introduce basic skills through creative dance techniques, centre work, and flexibility exercises. Level 2 and 3 classes add jazz elements. Ballet classes, available at levels 1, 2, and 3 with pointe options, cover classical technique, vocabulary, and interpretation. Jazz classes combine jazz, modern dance, and ballet for all ages. Ballet Folklorico classes teach Mexican culture, regional dances, Mexican footwork (zapateado), and skirt work. Tap classes cover history, time steps, rhythm tap, and combinations. Registration is available online only.
