About this studio
Scott Dance Studio has been teaching dance in Indianapolis for over 40 years, making it one of the longest-established major studios in Indiana. Located in the Broad Ripple area at 6162 Hillside Avenue, the studio is run as a second-generation family business and remains independent, which it says allows them to offer the latest teaching methods at competitive cost.
The studio teaches a wide range of styles: Bolero, Cha Cha, Foxtrot, Jive, Mambo, Merengue, Nightclub Freestyle, Nightclub Slow Dance, Paso Doble, Polka, Quickstep, Rumba, Salsa, Samba, Swing, Tango, Waltz, West Coast Swing, Viennese Waltz, and Country & Western dances. This breadth prepares students for dancing at clubs, social gatherings, weddings, cruise ships, competitions, and vacations.
Instruction follows a three-part model. Private lessons are the core of learning—60-minute sessions with your own instructor, who develops an individualized lesson plan and chart for each student. Group lessons support private work by focusing on specific techniques (Cuban hip motion, posture, frame, rise and fall) and teaching fun dances used at practice parties. Practice parties are included at no additional cost and are central to the studio's method; they let you dance with other teachers and students, learn to navigate a crowded floor, build confidence with varied partners, and reinforce skills learned in lessons.
The studio offers two teaching paths. The comprehensive approach follows their syllabus with both steps and styling in American and International standards, building toward bronze, silver, and gold medals with numbered milestones. The custom approach tailors a program to your specific interests, though many students eventually move to comprehensive study.
The student body is a mix of individuals and couples from beginner to advanced. Singles without partners are welcome. The studio specializes in wedding dances and will provide one free 30-minute private consultation lesson for wedding couples, plus advice on music selection and choreography. They offer gift certificates, special introductory offers for new students, and a free trial lesson with no obligation. You can book a lesson by calling the studio.
