Before your first class
The studio accepts new students throughout the year and offers classes for ages 2 and up, with some age restrictions and prerequisites; contact the studio to discuss your child's level.

About this studio
The Dance Works has been making dance fun since 1979. Based in Plaistow Center, the studio serves dancers from age 2 through adults, with classes in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Irish Step, Acro, Baton, Contemporary, Lyric, Musical Theatre, Pointe, and Fitness.
All classes are taught by fully certified, professional instructors with many years of experience teaching both children and adults. Teachers have studied extensively with some of the finest teachers, both nationally and abroad, and regularly attend special classes, conventions, and seminars throughout the year to stay current in the ever-evolving world of dance. The studio is a member of Dance Masters of New England and the Dance Teachers' Club of Boston.
For younger dancers (ages 2–6), classes introduce the structure of dance with a combination of tap and ballet. Pre-teen dancers (ages 7–12) progress to single-session Ballet and Tap, and can choose from Jazz, Baton, Hip Hop, Irish, Theatre, and Acro. Pointe may be added for those taking Ballet, with teacher approval required. Adult classes are offered at multiple levels in Tap (I through V, plus Advanced Tap by invitation), Ballet, Jazz, Irish, Hip Hop, and Fitness. Adults have the option to participate in the annual recital and compete with instructor approval.
Advanced students may be invited to participate in the competitive dance program, which includes multiple events throughout the year and a more challenging curriculum. The studio holds an annual recital that offers all students the opportunity to show off what they've learned while gaining stage and performance experience.
New students are accepted throughout the year. The studio also offers birthday parties for 1½ to 2 hours, with themes including Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop, Rock 'n' Roll 50's, Tumbling, and Disney music themes. Gift certificates are available for purchase.
What to expect
Your first visit
Classes are structured by age and ability level, with single sessions typically 45 minutes to one hour. Younger children combine tap and ballet; older students and adults choose from a wide range of styles. The studio enforces a dress code (see details below) and only allows water in the dance studios. Parents can observe classes through two-way mirrors during specified Watch Week dates each month.

What to wear and bring

Dress code
Leotards and tights (any color), solid-color leggings, biker shorts, or ballet skirts must be worn to class (except Boys', Baton, Hip Hop, and Adult classes). Hair must be worn up if long; studs only (no dangle earrings). No T-shirts, pants, shorts, or socks. No street shoes in any dance rooms.
What to bring
Shoes vary by style: pink ballet for ages 6 and under (pink split-sole for 7+); black tap for ages 6 and under (tan Capezio U-buckles for 7+); tan gore or split-sole jazz boots; tan split-sole for theatre and baton; bare feet or footless tights for acro; sneakers for hip hop (dance-only, not street shoes); black ballet for Irish step. Boys', Hip Hop, and Adult classes have no dress code requirement. No street shoes are allowed in dance studios.
