Carolyn Dutra Dance Studio

Carolyn Dutra Dance Studio has been a fixture of dance education in Southern New England for 51 years. Miss Carolyn Dutra, a former Radio City Music Hall Rockette, founded and leads the studio with a philosophy centred on proper technique, kindness, tolerance and unity. The studio operates three locations: Warwick, Cranston and Smithfield, making classes accessible across the region. CDDS is inclusive—all children are welcome.

Classes span ages 16 months through adult. The youngest students start in Toddler & Me (16 months–3 years), a 30-minute class where a caregiver actively participates to nurture bonding and early motor development. Preschool (2 years 8 months–5) and Primary (5–7) follow a structured progression. From age 7, students enter a graded curriculum with five levels (1–5, ages 7–18) that students typically spend 2–3 years in, advancing only when they meet specific skill benchmarks. Each level deepens training in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, and adds Contemporary at Level 3. Acrobatics is offered separately or as a combo with Primary and higher levels.

The studio teaches Ballet using the Vaganova Method, with pointe training available for dancers who are at least 11, have studied ballet for 3+ years at 3–5 hours weekly, and are structurally ready—currently only select Company dancers go en pointe. Jazz emphasises American technique, theatre dance, funk and African influences. Tap focuses on musicality, syncopation and rhythmic coordination. Contemporary blends jazz, lyrical and ballet, encouraging improvisational expression. Acrobatics classes build strength, flexibility and balance through stretches, tumbling and tricks.

Beyond recreational classes, CDDS runs a Company programme for ages 7–18. Company dancers train 6–10 hours per week plus rehearsals and performances, study under Miss Carolyn and advanced staff, and train with master teachers from around the world. Annual Company auditions occur in summer. The studio also offers session and pop-up classes year-round, including Hippity Hop (hip hop for ages 5–7), Hip Hop (7+), Modeling & Manners, Musical Theater, Kids Yoga, Pound Fitness for adults, and more.

Performance is central to CDDS culture. The studio hosts a Winter Holiday Show and a June Recital each year, with performances scheduled across multiple days and venues (East Providence High School Auditorium in 2026). Dancers also perform at community events. The studio was voted Best Dance Studio in Rhode Island 2017–2025 in Providence Journal Readers' Choice. Alumni have become Radio City Music Hall Rockettes, cruiseline dancers, TV and film actors, models, singers, professional dance team members, and professionals in medicine, education, law enforcement and media.

Classes are structured by age and level with specific dress codes and requirements. You'll arrive in dance attire and designated shoes (details provided for each class type), pull hair back, remove jewellery, and wait in the studio or designated area. Instructors emphasise proper technique in a family-friendly, professional atmosphere with respect and discipline expected at all times.

The studio is led by Miss Carolyn Dutra, founder and former Radio City Music Hall Rockette. Company dancers train under Miss Carolyn and her advanced staff, as well as master teachers from around the world. Miss Rachel teaches some session classes, having studied directly under Miss Carolyn and continuing her curriculum.

The studio welcomes all children from 16 months onwards with no prior experience required for most classes; new adult students need some dance background and get one free trial.
