Janusz Józefowicz

Janusz Józefowicz is a choreographer, dancer, director, actor and screenwriter whose career has defined contemporary Polish musical theatre. Born on 3 July 1959 in Świecie, Poland, Józefowicz trained in acting at the Aleksander Zelwerowicz National Academy of Dramatic Art and studied dance at the Vocal and Dance School in Koszęcin and in Prague. His formation across disciplines—performance, choreography, and dramatic direction—shaped a career that moves fluidly between stage and screen.

Since 1992, Józefowicz has served as artistic director of Warsaw's Studio Buffo, a position that has anchored his creative work for over three decades. His most celebrated achievement is *Metro*, a musical he directed and choreographed that achieved remarkable longevity, reaching Broadway's Minskoff Theatre. The production established him as a major voice in musical theatre across Europe and North America.

Beyond *Metro*, Józefowicz has continued to innovate in form and technology. He directed *Polita*, a musical whose staging combined live performance with stereoscopic virtual scenery—an ambitious integration of digital and embodied theatre that reflects his willingness to experiment with how dance and music can be staged. His work in film includes acting roles in *Sztos*, *Poranek kojota* and *Superprodukcja*. Józefowicz's career demonstrates the interconnection between choreography, musical-theatre direction, and performer training, making him a central figure in the development of Polish musical theatre over the past three decades.
